Artist Research

Andy Warhol, Liz #5 (Early Colored Liz), 1963

Deborah Kass, Blue Deb, 2012

Upon research, I discovered that Deborah Kass is a female artist who appropriates the styles of popular male artists such as Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, and Jackson Pollock. Through appropriating and remixing the existing art, she presents a new female-focused perspective that has been previously muted. Looking at her work, I found her appropriation of Warhol's work to be most striking because it's such a recognizable style.

For instance, she appropriates Andy Warhol's Liz #5 and creates Blue Deb. At first glance, it is easy to mistake Kass' work to be that of Warhol's. However, upon closer inspection, it is revealed that the subject has been switched from Elizabeth Taylor to Deborah Kass herself. In a way, the art tells an alternate story where a lesbian Jewish-American woman is represented in pop art.
